Scunthorpe v Sheffield Wednesday: Soares to stay with Owls until summer

TOM SOARES has agreed to stay on loan with Sheffield Wednesday for the rest of the season.

The Stoke City midfielder has spent the last two months on loan at Hillsborough and will remain in the side for tonight's trip to Scunthorpe United.

"He has really impressed me in the short time I have been at the club so far," said manager Alan Irvine. "He will prove a very important addition to the squad for the busy schedule of fixtures we have to come."

The Owls have won three games out of three under Irvine and moved above Scunthorpe in the table at the weekend courtesy of a home win over Peterborough United.

Scunthorpe, however, have a game in hand due to their involvement in the FA Cup and could leapfrog the Owls tonight.

Irvine said: "Anyone who watched Scunthorpe against Manchester City (on Sunday) saw they are a good side and well organised. They have players who can hurt you, all over the field, and are obviously dangerous from set pieces."

Irvine is keen to eliminate the habit of conceding late goals which has threatened to hijack Wednesday's last two victories.

"We didn't manage the Peterborough game as well as I would have liked towards the end," he admitted. "We have some work to do to become as reliable and as consistent as I would like us to be. We have got some good results by being well organised, disciplined and determined and we have to show all those qualities to avoid losing games."

Transfer-listed Francis Jeffers has recovered from a hamstring injury and will be available to Irvine for the first time tonight.
