Sharp Grayson sees off Blades to seal deal for Connolly

LEEDS United have beaten off competition from Sheffield United to land defender Paul Connolly from Derby County.

Connolly spent two months on loan with the Blades last season and was a summer transfer target for manager Kevin Blackwell.

However, Leeds manager Simon Grayson has persuaded the 26-year-old to move to Elland Road instead and Connolly will compete for the rightback slot with Jason Crowe, Andrew Hughes and Leigh Bromby.

"I heard about the interest a while ago," he said. "I followed Leeds's fortunes last season and was obviously hoping the club would get to the Championship. There were others – but Leeds gave me a concrete offer.

"I spoke to the gaffer (Grayson) while I was on holiday and we had a long chat. He didn't have to sell the club – you don't have to sell Leeds – he said he wanted me and he seems like he will be a really good guy to work with."

Connolly, who started his career at Plymouth Argyle, is the third new arrival of the summer at Leeds following the capture of Notts County goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and Swindon Town striker Billy Paynter.

Although he still had another 12 months on his contract at Derby, he secured his release on a free transfer following talks with manager Nigel Clough.

Commenting on his time at Pride Park, he said: "I don't know what's gone on really. I fell out of favour, I've hardly been spoken to, and I went to Sheffield United on loan and enjoyed it.

"It was a season I want to forget. This is a fresh challenge. I have got my driving ambition back, and I know what I want to achieve."

Looking ahead to the new season, Connolly said: "There's nothing to be scared of. Look at Blackpool last season. Bristol City and Leicester both made the play-offs after coming up so I think we will do well."

Grayson said: "Paul brings plenty of experience and know-how to the squad. He has made a lot of appearances at this level."

Carlisle United, meanwhile, will not be punished by the Football Association over a pitch invasion at Brunton Park which led to Leeds players Robert Snodgrass and Shane Lowry allegedly being punched.

Leeds manager Grayson was heavily critical of the stewarding after the Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie on February 9.

Rochdale defender Tom Kennedy has snubbed a move to Doncaster Rovers and joined Leicester City. Rovers manager Sean O'Driscoll was keen to sign Kennedy, 24, as a replacement for left-back Gareth Roberts who has joined Derby.
