Blades striker Evans looking set for exit

SHEFFIELD United manager Danny Wilson last night opened the door for striker Ched Evans to leave Bramall Lane.

The Welsh international, who cost the Blades £3m from Manchester City two summers ago, has been linked with Leicester City, Norwich City, Middlesbrough, Cardiff City and Ipswich Town.

Wilson is hoping that a deal can be done soon in order to assist with his preparations for the new season.

Strikers Darius Henderson and Jamie Ward have already been sold to Millwall and Derby County, respectively, while teenager Jordan Slew has yet to commit his future to the club amid interest from Premier League Fulham .

“We are hoping that one or two things can happen,” admitted Wilson. “We have had a few phone calls but they have not been followed up yet. Ched is a player who needs to possibly resurrect his career again and get it back on track.

“He didn’t play a lot of games last season and will be wanting to get back amongst the goals at the highest possible level. You can’t blame the lad for wanting to do that,” he added.

Evans, 22, has scored just 13 goals in 71 appearances for the Blades but is still a regular in the Welsh squad. His departure, however, will save the club around £1m in wages before his contract expires next summer.

Wilson, meanwhile, confirmed that talks with Slew are ongoing and has stressed that the matter needs resolving before the start of the season.

“It’s been a protracted negotiation but I am sure we are getting close,” he said. “For everyone’s sake, we have got to be doing it before the season starts. He doesn’t want to go into the season with this hanging over his head. He’s never been in this position before and will find it distracting. We want to make sure that doesn’t happen. The sooner we can put it to bed, the better.”

According to Wilson, there have been no enquiries for defender Matt Lowton despite speculation to the contrary.

Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Tommy Miller is wanted by League Two Bradford City. Miller, 32, was released this summer after spending two seasons at Hillsborough.
