SHEFFIELD United manager Nigel Adkins has no plans to amend his upbeat approach despite acknowledging it grates with some of the League One club’s followers.
Adkins, whose team play their penultimate away match of the season at Shrewsbury Town tomorrow, made no apologies for refusing to accept defeat in the race for play-off qualification ahead of the weekend’s game against Chesterfield.
Although the 51-year-old is aware of calls for him to adopt a demeanour that more closely reflects the prevailing terrace mood, he explained that being responsible for the well-being of a dressing room means that is not an option.
“I know it might not always be to some people’s liking,” Adkins said. “But I’m consistent with my mood. I never get too high when I win or too low when I lose; I try and maintain a level because that’s the most constructive thing to do.”
Chesterfield remain in relegation trouble after this loss to Sheffield United. Alex Baptiste opened the scoring before Che Adams stroked into an empty net from 30 yards after a stray clearance, and Billy Sharp added a third.
Adkins faces a busy summer as he looks to revamp a squad that has so far failed to live-up to lofty pre-season expectations. Numerous first-team players are entering the final stages of their contracts.
