Sheffield United lost at Coventry City as they finally waved farewell to their League One play-off hopes.

The Blades started poorly and were 2-0 down inside the first 10 minutes.

Sheffield United.

Sheffield United.

First, Marc-Antoine Fortuné fired home on four minutes.

And four minutes later it was 2-0, Andy Rose netting after good work from Joe Cole.

Billy Sharp pulled a goal back after a second-half penalty.

But City added a third goal via Lameiras to end United’s outside hopes of the play-offs,

Blades boss Nigel Adkins said: “We started poorly but re-grouped well. We had good possession and produced some bits of creative play.

“We kept knocking on the door but their keeper made some good saves and in the end we were done by a sucker punch.

“We showed character to get back into the game and I think we got it right tactically but we did not get that bit of fortune you need.

“After our last game we will reflect on the season and make sure we get it right next year.”
