FT: Oldham 2-2 Sheffield United - Clough satisfied with point

STRIKER Dominic Poleon failed to score in seven appearances on loan for Sheffield United but he put a dent in the Blades’ play-off push with two cracking strikes in the first half at Boundary Park.

However, the visitors showed their resilience and second-half goals from Jason Holt and Jamie Murphy earned them a point to the delight of their 1,800 followers.

With this being their third game in around a week, Nigel Clough rotated his Blades squad.

Strikers Steven Davies and Matt Done dropped to the bench, leaving Marc McNulty as the lone forward.

Ryan Flynn and Jamie Murphy provided width in a five-man midfield with Michael Doyle, Louis Reed and Holt in central roles.

Former Oldham striker Jose Baxter was also on the bench while Oldham’s attack was led by Poleon, partnered by Rhys Turner.

The 23-year-old required no help, however, as he robbed Kennedy in midfield, raced down the right channel and drove a low shot beyond Mark Howard for a 23rd-minute opener.

Chelsea product Poleon then smashed home a stunning 35-yarder after battling with two defenders and getting the ball back via a fortunate ricochet in the 43rd.

Poleon could have made it 3-0 early in the second half but screwed his shot wide.

It proved an important miss as Paul Coutts, who had come on at the break with Stefan Scougall, went down the right and crossed for Holt to tap home.

Murphy also struck from six yards after John Brayford had headed back across goal a corner which was hotly disputed by the hosts.

Blades captain Michael Doyle also forced Joel Coleman to tip over before sending a rasping shot crashing off a post as the Blades went in search of a winner.

Clough said: “Looking at a few other results, that looks like being an important point.

“There’ll probably have to be more changes at Yeovil but the players are showing great character.”
