FT: Sheffield United 1-1 Oldham Athletic

Sheffield United’s unbeaten start to the season continued but not in the fashion they would have wished as Matt Smith rescued a point for Oldham in the 96th minute.

England youth keeper George Long stepped in for the injured Mark Howard and was all set for a clean sheet until Smith struck.

The Blades struggled for cohesion in the first half and Oldham rued Robbie Simpson sending a first_minute header wide.

Neil Blackman struck a 52nd-minute penalty to put the Blades ahead after Dave Kitson had been pulled back by M’voto.

Long produced a fine save from Matt Derbyshire’s shot on the turn to keep the Blades ahead.

Sub Matt Smith grabbed a point in the seventh minute of stoppage time, converting a cross from Jose Baxter.

United remain in third but the draw prevented them climbing above Stevenage into the second automatic promotion spot.

Manager Danny Wilson said: “It’s not like a defeat but I think it’s very, very disappointing to concede at the time we did. I mean - 97 minutes - you’d think the game would’ve been over before that, but it wasn’t and that’s down to ourselves. We have to play to the whistle and we didn’t do that.

“There’s one ball been hogged into the box, it’s coming down with snow on it and we’ve been flat-footed and we haven’t dealt with it and that’s why we’ve come away with 1-1.”
