The Blades recalled right-back Tony McMahon after injury in several changes for the hosts.

“Tony played Tuesday, played for 90 minutes, so that’s good,” said Blades boss David Weir. “It was important for him to get through that and I think it will do him the world of good.”

The Blades had enjoyed the lion’s share of the opening 20 minutes, but went behind to a breakaway goal.

United lost possession at their own corner and when the ball was fed into the path of Freddie Sears, he clinically slid it beyond George Long to stun the Kop.

The hosts were level just before half-time, when Harry Maguire ended a frustrating first 45 minutes at Bramall Lane with a goal.

Lyle Taylor had a last-minute ‘goal’ ruled out for offside.

Blades: Long, Maguire, Doyle, Taylor, Collins, Coady, Brandy, McGinty, Murphy, McFadzean, McMahon.
