Full-time: Sheffield United 1-0 Shrewsbury Town

The promotion challenge begins with a home win against Shrewsbury for Sheffield United.

Danny Wilson’s second season in charge at Bramall Lane is all about earning a place in the Championship.

And they began brightly with Williams crossing for David McAllister to volley United in front after just four minutes.

And even though they were unable to add to that against the League One newcomers, they hung on for an opening-day victory.

Afterwards, Wilson was fulsome in his praise of the newly-promoted Shrews.

The Blades boss said: “I thought Shrewsbury were excellent at times.

“They might have surprised a few people. Not me.”

And on his own team’s performance, Wilson added: “Of course we can improve. It’s the first match of the season.”
