Hartlepool United v Sheffield United: Wilson is expecting a scrap

DANNY WILSON wants no repeat of the Carling Cup shocker that sent Sheffield United on the road to ruin.

The Blades were beaten 2-0 at Hartlepool in the first round 12 months ago, a result which pushed then manager Kevin Blackwell to the brink of the sack.

Blackwell was duly axed and the Blades lurched from crisis to crisis before being relegated to League One.

The two clubs meet again tonight, offering the Blades an ideal opportunity for revenge.

For new Blades manager Wilson, the tie also brings a return to the club where he won promotion four years ago.

“We want to win this game because progress in this competition is one of our priorities,” he said.

“It’s also important to try and get some momentum going after opening the season with a victory at Oldham.

“If last season’s result tells us anything, it is that we cannot just go up there and expect to sail through. Having worked there for two seasons, I am well aware how tough it can be. They don’t have much to spend so the players they bring in have to be really dedicated and prepared to scrap for wins. The fans are also very passionate.”

Wilson will make only minor changes with doubts over the fitness of striker Chris Porter (dead leg) and winger Ryan Flynn (hamstring)

“We won’t be resting people, we will be putting out the strongest team we can. There will be one or two changes – just the right formula to win the game. “
