Henderson looks at cut-price Millwall move but Wilson aims to keep Slew

SHEFFIELD United striker Darius Henderson has been offered a return to the Championship with Millwall.

The Blades are also set for crunch talks over the next 48 hours with teenage striker Jordan Slew, who is wanted by Premier League Fulham.

Henderson, 29, is one of the highest-paid players at Bramall Lane and his departure will save the Blades around £1m in wages next season.

But Slew, 18, has been offered a new contract in a move designed to strengthen his desire to stay.

The Blades initially wanted £1m for Henderson, who cost £2m from Watford three summers ago, but have found willing takers thin on the ground.

It is now believed that Henderson will be allowed to leave on a free transfer – releasing enough money in wages for manager Danny Wilson to sign four new players on free transfers. Henderson is wanted by Millwall manager Kenny Jackett as a replacement for striker Steve Morison, who has been sold to Norwich City.

Talks with Slew, meanwhile, have reached crunch point with the Blades keen to discover whether the youngster is commited to League One football.

Fulham have tabled a £500,000 bid for his services and the England Under-19 international is keen for an opportunity to discuss a move to Craven Cottage.

Manager Wilson, however, plans to persuade the youngster that staying with his hometown club for now can benefit Slew’s career in the long term.

The Blades, whose only capture this summer has been that of Swindon Town defender Lescinel Jean-Francois, will need to keep a tighter control on their finances this season after the setback of relegation from the Championship.

However, if a small number of players can be sold for relatively decent amounts of money, it will remove the need for wholesale change.

Wilson continued a shake-up of the club’s backroom staff yesterday when Dave Morrison replaced Dean Riddle as fitness coach.

Morrison, 36, arrives from Swindon Town where he had worked previously under Wilson for nearly three years. His former clubs include Peterbrough United, Leyton Orient and Bohemians.

Wilson said: “Dave is a great lad, full of energy and very clever. He works using science, modern theories, and all the latest technology to make his work as effective as possible. The players will take to him and he’s looking forward to getting started.”

Former Mansfield Town and Notts County manager Billy Dearden, meanwhile, is set to be unveiled today as the club’s new chief scout.

Dearden, who spent six years with the Blades as a player in the 1970s, will become the fourth new addition to Wilson’s backroom staff following the appointments of Chris Morgan as player-coach, Frank Barlow as assistant manager and Morrison.

Former Champions League winner Jerzy Dudek has emerged as a surprise candidate to become Leeds United’s first-choice goalkeeper next season, the Yorkshire Post understands.

The 38-year-old is one of several targets being spoken to by the Elland Road club as part of the search for Kasper Schmeichel’s replacement.

United manager Simon Grayson had wanted Keiren Westwood but the out-of-contract Coventry City man instead signed for Premier League Sunderland, while other names to be linked with a possible move to Yorkshire include former Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Lee Grant and Fraser Forster of Newcastle United.

Dudek is available on a free transfer after leaving Real Madrid, where he played second fiddle to Iker Casillas to such an extent that he made just two La Liga appearances in four years.

The former Poland international, who lifted the Champions League in 2005 when wearing Liverpool’s colours, was recently linked with a possible return to the Premier League with Aston Villa.

United have made just one signing this summer, Paul Rachubka having joined on a free transfer from Blackpool last week.

Grayson wants to bring in a goalkeeper, left-back and central defender, while also bolstering a midfield that has lost Bradley Johnson and Neil Kilkenny.

Robert Snodgrass and Max Gradel have also been linked with a move away with Norwich wanting the Scot and West Ham having joined Swansea and Fulham in keeping an eye on the Ivorian.
