Henderson vows to stay with relegated Blades side

SHEFFIELD United striker Darius Henderson says he will not be offering to leave the club this summer.

Henderson, a target for the Bramall Lane boo-boys, still has another 12 months to serve on his contract at Bramall Lane.

The Blades need to cut their £12m wage bill but the former Watford and Gillingham striker wants to ‘set the record straight’ by helping the club bounce back from relegation.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s final game, away at Swansea City, Henderson said: “If a situation arises, obviously I will have to talk to the other club involved. At the end of the day, I have a responsibility to myself and my family. But I certainly won’t be offering to leave Sheffield United.

“I have no intention of going,” he added. “My main focus and goal now is to get properly fit and be firing on all cylinders for the start of next season.”

After suffering a serious hip injury, Henderson spent the majority of this season on the sidelines but returned to action with 10 games to go.

He was sent off in his comeback game against Watford and struggled to rediscover his best form. He was jeered off the field after missing several opportunities in a home defeat by Middlesbrough but was a hero four games later as he scored twice in an away victory at Reading.

“It was a massive risk coming back at Watford after only two training sessions and after 11 months out through injury and it’s been a struggle physically,” he admitted yesterday. “But I hold myself responsible and accountable for our relegation. I hold myself responsible to play well and affect the team in a positive manner – and I have not been able to do that.”

Blades manager Micky Adams, meanwhile, is set to blood three more of the club’s youngsters tomorrow against Swansea.

Goalkeeper George Long, defender Terry Kennedy and midfielder Matthew Harriott are all members of the Blades’ team that has reached the final of this season’s FA Youth Cup.

In recent weeks, striker Jordan Slew and defender Harry Maguire have made the same step up to the first team.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Gary Megson has refused to comment on the possibility of summer moves for Wolves defender Danny Batth and Scunthorpe United defender Rob Jones.

Both players are set to make their final appearances on loan for the club in tomorrow’s home game with Exeter City.

Megson said: “They have impressed, they have tightened us up immeasurably at the back, they are terrific lads, and both have their strengths in the air – which you certainly need in this division. But they are not our players.”
