Lane party in 125 theme for anniversary

A RED-AND-WHITE celebration party to mark Sheffield United’s 125th anniversary gets in full swing at 11am at Bramall Lane on Saturday, with the club coming together in a tribute to the Blades’ rich heritage.

A number of Lane favourites from yester-year will be in attendance for of the game with Wolves, with the seventies – a time which saw the Blades in the top flight from 1971-72 to 1975-76 – represented in the likes of Eddie Colquhoun and Geoff Salmons.

Late eighties and early nineties cult hero Bob Booker will also be attending, along with several other leading players from the successful Dave Bassett era such as Simon Tracey and Paul Stancliffe.

Prominent players from Neil Warnock’s promotion-winning side of 2005-06 will also be present including Neil Shipperley and Rob Kozluk.

The pre-match entertainment starts at 11am, with a musical accompaniment provided inside and outside the stadium by the Dinnington Colliery brass band, decked out in special red and white 125 celebration United scarves.

A 125 fan-zone will open in the Cherry Street car park from 11am to 1pm, featuring a big screen and live music.

The area will be adorned with fans’ flags, eating and a drinks areas where a specially-commissioned 125 Blades real ale, served on draught, will be available.

The first 125 adult fans through the gate at 11am will be able to purchase a pint of 125 ale for £1.25 and receive a special 125 ale beer pump clip.

United co-chairman Kevin McCabe will address supporters in the fan-zone at 12.30pm, while a specially-commissioned video charting United’s history through milestones and goals will be screened in the stadium 20 minutes later.

At 1.10pm, a parade of playing legends in front of the crowd will be staged, forming a guard of honour in the tunnel area.

Both sets of players will be welcomed onto pitch in a band fanfare at 1.20pm, while there will be a unique rendition of the Blades’ ‘Greasy Chip Butty’ anthem just before kick-off at 1.25pm.
