Leeds United, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday all over Team of the Week, plus a sentimental nod to Jack Charlton

Leeds United and the two Sheffield clubs dominate our team of the week after a mixed weekend for the Yorkshire clubs.

Of our relegation-threatened sides, only Barnsley managed as much as a point, dismal performances from Huddersfield Town, Hull City and Middlesbrough narrowing the field somewhat.

But Sheffield United kept up their push for Europe with an outstanding win over Chelsea, Leeds United remain on course to return to the Premier League after a dramatic victory at Swansea City and in theory Sheffield Wednesday confirmed their place in next season’s Championship by convincingly beating Queens Park Rangers, although the misconduct charge hanging over them muddies the water on that front.

Here are our choices for this week, in a 3-4-1-2 formation.

How much worse might Middlesbrough’s defeat been at Bristol City without the saves he made> A rare chink of light on a miserable weekend for Yorkshire’s relegation-threatened teams.

Chris Basham (Sheffield United)

Went off early after being struck in the face by a fierce Ross Barkley free-kick, but put in a wonderful curling cross in the second half of the Blades’ 3-0 demolition of Chelsea.

Centre-back

Dominic Iorfa (Sheffield Wednesday)

The Owls’ defence was under an uncomfortable spotlight in midweek but Iorfa set the ball rolling for the win at Queens Park Rangers which will keep them in the Championship – providing points deductions do not come into play.

Left centre-back

Michael Sollbauer (Barnsley)

More was needed at the other end of bottom-of-the-table Barnsley, but at least Sollbauer contributed to a much-needed clean sheet at home to Wigan Athletic.

Garry Monk has stuck with three at the back since the resumption and Harris is one of the players it appears to be bringing the best out of.

Right central midfield

Ben Osborn (Sheffield United)

It is only a couple of weeks ago the midfielder made his first Premier League start for the Blades almost a year after joining but he has quietly been one of their best performers since. A lovely turn to make space as he started off the move for the first two, and a pass to release Enda Stevens in the build-up to the second.

Left central midfield

Pablo Hernandez (Leeds United)

Came off the bench to score a dramatic late winner at old club Swansea City, but he lifted Leeds United’s football from the moment he was introduced at the start of the second half. It is becoming a theme of the restart.

Left wing-back

Ezgjan Alioski (Leeds United)

Another who is making a habit of improving Leeds from the bench.

David McGoldrick (Sheffield United)

His two goals were gifts gratefully received by a man who came into the game yet to score in the Premier League but some of his touches were sublime. A classy performer whose value to the Blades is not overlooked at Bramall Lane.

Centre forward

Oli McBurnie (Sheffield United)

A goal and an outstanding performance as a targetman by McBurnie. He can consider himself very unlucky to have been substituted, but manager Chris Wilder needed Lys Mousset’s pace on the counter-attack.

Centre forward

Josh Windass (Sheffield Wednesday)

Injury meant this was the on-loan forward’s first start since March and he marked it with a goal. Dean’s son wants to stay permanently and he is certainly going the right way about it.

Manager

Jack Charlton (former Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday)

Chris Wilder’s tactics were spot on at Bramall Lane and Marcelo Bielsa’s substitutions again made the difference for Leeds, but this choice is unashamedly sentimental with thoughts up and down the country with Leeds’s record-appearance maker, another member of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning side taken away from us this weekend.
