Lucas thanks Cresswell for ‘saving my life’

ROCHDALE goalkeeper David Lucas has hailed Sheffield United striker Richard Cresswell for ‘saving his life’ last weekend at Bramall Lane.

Former Sheffield Wednesday, Barnsley and Leeds United goalkeeper Lucas was knocked unconscious during the League One game between the two clubs and Cresswell immediately moved the 34-year-old into the recovery position.

“As dramatic as it sounds to say ‘he saved my life’, maybe he did,” Lucas said.

“You don’t realise at the time but the lads said it was scary stuff. I’ve been told Cressy put me in the recovery position and stopped me swallowing my tongue. It was lucky on my part that someone as sensible and quick-thinking like Cressy reacted as quickly as he did.”

Lucas was rushed to hospital after the incident but returned to the stadium before the final whistle after being given the all-clear.
