Match Centre: Blackburn Rovers 3 Sheffield Wednesday 1, Everton 3 Sheffield United 1

The two Sheffield clubs have been knocked out of the Carling Cup by Premier League opposition.

Everton booked their place in the third round of the Carling Cup after coming from behind to complete a comfortable victory over Sheffield United at Goodison Park.

The npower League One side went in front against the run of play in the 28th minute through Richard Cresswell, but the same player diverted the ball into his own net moments later after Steve Simonsen had got a palm to a strike by Jack Rodwell.

The Toffees then took control of proceedings, with goals from Victor Anichebe and Mikel Arteta swiftly turning the game on its head in the space of five minutes before the break.

Blackburn Rovers 3 Sheffield Wednesday 1

Ruben Rochina grabbed his first goals for Blackburn as a whirlwind start helped Steve Kean’s men to a Carling Cup second round win over Sheffield Wednesday.

Rovers scored all three in the opening seven minutes with Rochina finding the net in the third and fourth minutes and David Goodwillie ramming home the third.

Wednesday offered little until first-half injury time when Danny Uchechi headed a Chris Sedgwick cross just wide, but Morrison’s half-time arrival helped the visitors.

Gary Megson had made eight changes to the side that had beaten Notts County at the weekend and Morrison immediately galvanised his inexperienced team-mates.

It was the perfect start for Kean’s pointless Barclays Premier League side and they held on with ease despite Clinton Morrison’s second-half consolation.
