Match Centre: Sheffield United 0 Charlton Athletic 2

SHEFFIELD United suffered a third defeat in four games today against League One leaders Charlton Athletic.

Second half-goals from substitute Yann Kermorgant and striker Bradley Wright-Phillips put paid to the Blades in front of the biggest gate of the season at Bramall Lane, 20,743.

Kermorgant scored with his first touch of the game - heading home a Dale Stephens corner in the 63rd minute.

Wright-Phillips doubled the lead four minutes later after a slip by defender Neill Collins.

Although substitute Richard Cresswell brought a fine save from Charlton goalkeeper Ben Hamer and Ched Evans hit the post in stoppage time, the Blades could have few complaints about the result.

Manager Danny Wilson said: “I’m obviously disappointed with the result. We had some good chances to score, particularly in the first half when we had our noses in front.

“It was a very close game and we had enough chances to win the game but we just didn’t take them.

“I thought there were two teams who were very capable of winning the game. We should have come out of it with something but we can’t complain.

“We’ve made three mistakes in the last two games and we’ve been punished every time.”

Wilson was also critical of his side’s defending at the corner which led to Charlton`s opening goal from Kermorgant.

He said: “People know their jobs but they didn’t do them so the lad was left with a free header, which was very disappointing.”

The Blades were unlucky not to take the lead after 12 minutes when a Neill Collins header was blocked on the line by Charlton captain Johnnie Jackson.

At the opposite end, former Sheffield Wednesday defender Michael Morrison missed a golden opportunity on 28 minutes, shooting wide after running onto a clever flick by Paul Hayes.

The Blades struggled to find their rhythm but have still forced several corners. Charlton were content to break on the counter attack yet rarely tested Blades goalkeeper Steve Simonsen in the first half.
