Oldham Athletic 0 Sheffield United 2: Maguire on target for Blades

THE Blades began life back in League One this afternoon with victory on their first visit to Boundary Park in 25 years, writes Robert Gledhill.

The clubs were in the old Division One in those days and Sheffield United recorded a 2-0 victory in that September 7, 1996 encounter.

Danny Wilson handed debuts to three players for his first competitive match in charge - defender Lecsinel Jean-Francois, flank player Ryan Flynn and Chris Porter, who partnered Richard Cresswell up front.

The Blades dominated possession for the opening 22 minutes but never threatened to score.

Oldham came back at them, resulting in bookings for both Blades full-backs Jean-Francois and Matt Lowton, but they too never looked likely to score, Chris Taylor going the closest with a shot just over the bar in the last minute of the half.

It was left to Harry McGuire to show the strikers how it should be done, the Blades central defender powering home a 48th-minute header from Stephen Quinn’s corner.

With Oldham’s defence disintegrating, Cresswell got between two defenders and slid in Sheffield’s second in the 54th minute, meeting a low cross from Quinn.
