News that funds were coming into the Bramall Lane club were leaked last week and although the club have yet to confirm the reports, it is understood that an announcement will be made today.

The new investors are set to become equal partners with Kevin McCabe’s company, the Scarborough Group, which controls the club. It is believed the investment will significantly help the football club on the field, while the boardroom will also be reshaped.

The news is obviously a welcome boost for tmanager David Weir.

The Scot, who was involved in talks concerning the deal, said: “My belief on it is that it stabilises the club, it puts the club on a sound footing and it gives us the opportunity to progress.

“It’s definitely positive news for the club with regards to moving forward.

“I was involved in helping along the process by showing the plans we have for the football side of things with regards how I see it moving forward; the structures etc, of how to make Sheffield United a successful club.

“At the minute we’re getting a few knocks (on the pitch) and there’s nobody more disappointed than the players and the management in the dressing room.

“So when you get positive news like this, and knowing the club is working hard behind the scenes, then it gives you a little bit of confidence.”

The Blades look to take that into the game at League Two Scunthorpe, who, like Weir’s side, have not won since the opening game of the season.

United have reached the third round of this competition in each of the last two seasons.

Last six games: Scunthorpe WDDDLD; Sheff Utd WLLDLL.

Last time: Scunthorpe 1 Sheff Utd 1; September 8, 2012; League One.

Referee: J Simpson (Lancashire).
