Sheffield United 1 Burton Albion 2: No revenge for Blades as Hussey strikes late

Sheffield United failed to gain revenger for their League Cup defeat to Burton last season as Albion once more caused an upset at Bramall Lane last night.

Former Everton man David Weir may have replaced Danny Wilson as manager, buit it was the same outcome yesterday as United exited at the first time of asking.

Michael Doyle cancelled out Chris Hussey’s strike, before the visiting defender scored a second deep into added time after escaping his marker inside the penalty box.

The Blades looked lively throughout, but showed the lack of cutting edge which had been witness in the League One opener against Notts County.

A tendancy to over-elaborate in and around the Albion box saw a defensive lapse which allowed Hussey to score the first goal.

Chris Porter, preferred to Lyle Taylor in attack, should have drawn United level soon after the Albion defender pounced.

That honour eventually fell to Doyle whose thunderous effort left Jordan Pickford rooted to the spot.

But striker Taylor, a £250,000 purchase from Falkirk, presented an irrestible case for a more prominent role after stepping-off the substitutes bench with half-an-hour of the second-half remaining.

The single-mindedness which made him such a dangerous proposition north of the border was plain to see as he peppered Albion’s net with a series of shots before Hussey completed his brace.
