Sheffield United 2 Brentford 0: Slew and Cresswell earn Blades win

Goals from Jordan Slew and Richard Cresswell gave Danny Wilson an opening victory at Bramall Lane as Sheffield United beat Brentford.

New signing from Burnley Kevin McDonald replaced Michael Doyle in midfield and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing was given a home debut in place of injured winger Ryan Flynn.

Former York striker Clayton Donaldson led the attack for Brentford, under new manager and former Manchester City German striker Uwe Rosler.

Chances were at a premium in the first half - a header fromGary Alexander landing on the roof of the net and Niall McGinn twice firing wide for Brentford before Richard Lee first stuck up a hand to deny Slew, shooting on the turn inside the area, and then the Bees goalkeeper blocked the follow-up from Quinn.

As on the opening day at Oldham, the Blades struck soon after the interval, Slew scoring with a deflected shot after being set up by Cresswell’s lay-back from Quinn’s cross.

And, like at Boundary Park, Cresswell got the second, tapping home at the far post after Matt Lowton had driven the ball across from the right of the area in the 70th minute.
