Sheffield United boosted by return of John Fleck

John Fleck managed the full 90 minutes in the 1-0 defeat to West Ham United.

It has been a season beset by injury problems for the 29-year-old Scotland international.

He started the first two games of the season but Sunday was his first start in the Premier League since September 21, a succession of niggling injuries – most recently his back – forcing him to the sidelines.

He missed all of Scotland’s three games over the international break, including the penalty shootout victory over Serbia that sent them to the European Championships.

However, his return could be timely, given the run of fixtures ahead of Sheffield United as they look to climb off the foot of the table. Saturday night at fellow winless side West Bromwich Albion already has the makings of a huge game, one made for someone who can unpick a defence.

Fleck made two goals and scored five in United’s first season back in the top flight, but his overall contribution was so much more than just bare statistics. His decision-making, calmness in possession and incisive passes have been lacking in a side that has managed just four goals in nine games.

His return on Sunday certainly improved Chris Wilder’s outlook.

“Delighted, absolutely delighted for the boy,” said Wilder, of one of his first signings for the club back in the summer of 2016.

“John’s an integral part of what’s happened the last three or four years at this club.

“He’ll get better and he’ll have some top performances.”
