The 24 year-old Dutchman signed from Mechelen when the Blades won promotion to the Premier League in the summer of 2019, but his only appearance for the club came against Fylde in last season's FA Cup third round. He went off injured in the first half of the 2-1 win.

Since then, Verriups has been pushed down the pecking order by the summer signing of former Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham. Verrips sat on the bench for much of the early part of the season, when Foderingham was injured, but the London-born goalkeeper has been the back-up option to first-choice Aaron Ramsdale in the last five matches.

Emmen are bottom of Holland's Eredivisie, winless and with just six points from their opening 20 matches.

One player who is set to stay at Bramall Lane is midfielder John Lundstram, who was made available earlier in the season after refusing an extension to his contract, which expires at the end of the season.

"There has been no interest," said manager Chris Wilder on deadline day. "I believe John will be here until the end of the season."
