Sheffield United v Yeovil: Plenty left in the tank by Blades as they jostle for position

AS Nigel Clough prepares to celebrate his first anniversary in charge of Sheffield United this week, he believes the best is yet to come from the South Yorkshire club, despite them being handily placed in the promotion race.

The Blades host Yeovil Town tonight sitting seventh in the League One table with only goal difference separating the club from MK Dons in fifth.

It is the joint-highest standing United have had since Clough succeeded David Weir on October 23 last year

He said: “I think with the two points we lost last week (against Leyton Orient), the Bradford win (last Saturday) got it back in some ways. We would have taken three last week and a point against Bradford.

“Seventh is nicely placed and we still don’t feel as if we have hit top form yet.

“There were good elements out there against Bradford and you can see it is coming slowly. But we need a little bit more in certain areas.

“We want to get some momentum going. We should have got three points last week, but we have gained it back a bit now.

“We have Yeovil now and will try and get some points. We said all along, back in pre-season, that we were never going to be in good enough condition to absolutely start flying at the start of the season.

“But it is was being there or thereabouts when everything starts coming together hopefully towards Christmas. But we are not doing too badly.

“We lost our first two games, but I think we have only lost two since then in about 13 games so we are not doing too bad.”

Jay McEveley is expected to be fit despite suffering a shoulder injury in the 2-0 win at Valley Parade, while striker Michael Higdon returns from a three-game ban incurred by being sent off at Chesterfield.

United defender Craig Alcock is looking forward to facing his old club for the first time since leaving in 2011.

He added: “I am hoping to get a good reception (from the travelling fans). I enjoyed my time down there and it will also be nice to see a few old faces.

“Gary Johnson gave me my debut for the reserves and I was lucky enough to be made captain by (assistant) Terry Skiverton.”
