Sheffield’s big fierce rivals are united in shirt deal

BOTH Milan Mandaric and Kevin McCabe have hailed the ground-breaking deal that will see Sheffield Wednesday and United share shirt sponsors next season.

As exclusively revealed in Tuesday’s Yorkshire Post, the logos of Westfield Health and the Gilder Group will appear on the front of both clubs’ kit in a first for Steel City football.

The deal, which has been called ‘Supporting Sheffield’ and is believed to be worth a six-figure sum to the two rivals, will see the name ‘Westfield Health’ appear on the front of United’s home shirt and Wednesday’s away kit, while the Owls will sport the ‘Gilder Group’ at Hillsborough as the Blades do the same on the road.

Officials confirmed the deal yesterday in the Adelphi Room of the Crucible Theatre, where both clubs were originally formed.

Speaking about the historic link-up with two of Sheffield’s most recognisable businesses, Owls chairman Mandaric said: “This is an exciting partnership for all concerned and will further develop as the season progresses.

“I am new to this city but have quickly recognised the importance of working with two organisations who are Sheffield through and through.”

Blades counterpart Kevin McCabe added: “Sheffield is very proud of its footballing heritage and with this deal the city has added yet another first to the history books.

Sheffield United are eagerly anticipating working with two such reputable Sheffield-based companies, who we know well, in the season ahead.”

The Steel City rivals, who will be competing in League One this term, have never previously been sponsored by the same company.

The other two clubs from the same city who have had identical sponsors are Celtic and Rangers, who enjoyed simultaneous link-ups with Carling and Tennent’s.

Sheffield Chamber of Commerce president, Yuri Matischen, said: “This sums up everything that is great about Sheffield, bringing together enterprise on one hand and sport on the other.”
