Swindon Town v Sheffield United: Clough’s Blades given a royal seal of approval

SHEFFIELD UNITED co-owner HRH Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has praised the club’s hunger for promotion – whether it is achieved this season or next.

The Blades were at a low ebb when the Saudi Arabian, a member of the kingdom’s ruling family, secured a 50 per cent stake in the club in September and the prince has highlighted the autumnal derby defeat at Rotherham United as a low point.

The Bramall Lane outfit, who travel to Swindon today seeking to keep their outside hopes of reaching the play-offs intact with their 12th win in 14 matches in all competitions, will be a wholly different proportion to that who took the field against the Millers when the clubs have their re-match on Tuesday week.

Like the Blades supporters, the prince, who this week celebrated his first six months with the club, has savoured the upturn in fortunes under manager Nigel Clough and feels there are plenty more good days to come for the FA Cup semi-finalists.

He said: “During the first half of the season, I thought we were very poor, definitely not promotion material.

“Now with few additions, I see that we have grit, determination and fire in the belly.

“I see a club hungry for promotion and one able to go after it.

“It’s seemed like a roller coaster at times. I am really glad to be having this experience and to have it with Sheffield United.

“God willing, I hope to see the club through to a long run in the top flight.

“For now, we will have to battle on, slogging it out one day at a time.

“We have the right management team resourced at the right levels doing the right things. Results will come, if we remain resolute and roll with the punches.”
