Wilson is expecting Brentford to go all out for win

The Blades are one of a host of sides chasing a place in the top two ahead of today’s game of the day in the third tier as the live Sky cameras visit Bramall Lane.

United dropped out of the automatic promotion places last weekend courtesy of a 4-0 defeat at Stevenage, a result that came as even more of a shock because previously Wilson’s men had not conceded in six games.

Victory today over the Bees in the lunchtime encounter would see the south Yorkshire side return to the top two, albeit possibly only for a couple of hours with third-placed Swindon Town set to host Notts County at 3pm.

Wilson said: “I think it (the promotion race) will go to the wire. If it doesn’t and we are the ones who have run away with it then I will be delighted.

“But the trend at the moment is for the table to change with every result. I don’t see why that will alter over the next six weeks.”

United are looking to avenge a 2-0 defeat at Griffin Park in 
November.

More important, however, is the need to leapfrog a Bees side who sit two points ahead in the table, albeit with the Blades having a game in hand.

Wilson added: “It being Brentford doesn’t bring any more pressure. How can we have any more pressure on us? We have enough for anyone. But this is the sort of game everyone wants to play in.

“I am really looking forward to it. Uwe (Rosler, Bees manager) has done brilliantly. I certainly fancied them at the start of the season.

“When we got beat down there, I knew they were a team to be reckoned with and a team who would be in the shake-up.

“Like ourselves, they have a good balance.”

With the Bees being the side in United’s sights, Wilson added: “Playing Brentford is a great opportunity. Will something give between two teams in form? I don’t know, but at this stage of the season it is a terrific game.

“I can guarantee they will try and come to win the game. We have had a couple of teams who have come to Bramall Lane and made a game of it (this season). That has helped make it a better spectacle.

“At times, though, others have left us knocking on the door. That can get a little boring at times, but you have to do it.

“Maybe Brentford will have the same mentality, but I look at their results and I surmise they will come to try and win the game.”

United have been held to goalless draws in each of their last two home games against Leyton Orient and Milton Keynes Dons.

Turning superiority into three points has, in fact, been something of a problem at the Lane this term with Wilson’s men having claimed less points on home soil than any of the other clubs in the top six.

With that in mind, Wilson has been pleased with how the Lane faithful have stuck with his side at home.

He said: “The fans have been brilliant.

“They had a little bit of a blip at the last but one home game, when they were a bit anxious.

“But they rectified it brilliantly from the first seconds against MK. They are a massive help to us.”
