Sheffield Wednesday 2 Blackburn Rovers 1 - Carvalhal happy to see Owls produce come-from-behind win

Rovers struck first through Craig Conway but an Adam Henley own goal drew Wednesday level. Conway was then sent off before Ross Wallace secured all three points for the hosts.

Carvalhal said: “We are happy, of course. Blackburn Rovers don’t score too many goals but they don’t concede many goals either, so we expected a game like this.

“The first 25 minutes were not good for us. The last 20 minutes of the first half we started to press Blackburn more, creating some chances. In the break, I told the players that we needed to do the same as we did in the last 20 minutes.”

Wednesday have taken 12 points from losing positions in home games this season, to Carvalhal’s delight.

“It’s not the first time we’ve been losing here at Hillsborough,” he said.

“We’ve played in this situation, which is very important. That’s why we didn’t disturb (the team) and we had the reaction and scored for 1-1.

“After the red card, we changed the system because we wanted to create more problems for the organisation of the Blackburn defence.

“Alex (Lopez) controlled the game in that moment very well, from right to left. Everybody understood it was a question of when our team would score the second goal.”

Blackburn’s opener came on the stroke of half-time when Darragh Lenihan delivered a cross from the right and Conway’s diving header found the bottom right corner.

For the equaliser, Wallace drove a ball into the box which deflected off Henley, going over Steele and into the back of the net.

Conway was shown a straight red card two minutes later by referee David Webb following a mistimed tackle. Fernando Forestieri then fired a cross into the box for Wallace to volley the winner.

Blackburn boss Paul Lambert said: “I thought there were big, big moments in the game that never went in our favour.

“In the lead-up to Sheffield Wednesday’s goal, it’s a free-kick for us and a handball. That’s 100 per cent the decision we should have got. It changed the course of the game.

“For the sending-off, I think Craig’s gone in strongly, no two ways about it, but I thought at the time he’s gone through his legs. I’ve seen it on the tape and that’s what happened.

“I’ve just watched the ‘Eddie the Eagle’ movie and I thought it was one of his ski jumps when (Lopez) was banging that floor. He went on the pitch quicker than Usain Bolt after that.

“One thing I’ll never question is their attitude to the game, even the way they train. They’re a fantastic group to train and they give you everything, every week and they have a great desire to try and win games. I can’t fault them by any stretch.”
