Sheffield Wednesday bolstered by Gary Hooper return ahead of Huddersfield Town derby

Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Hooper has handed the Owls a fitness boost.

The striker has been ruled out for seven weeks with a hamstring injury, but netted twice for the club’s Under-23s against Barnsley on Monday.

The 28-year-old suffered a slight reaction, but could return to full training on Friday.

"It's amazing to have him back,” said Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal. “It's very good to us. I'm looking forward to him being back as soon as possible.

“Gary is an important player who scores goals. He gives us pace and a different attributes to the other strikers that we have.”

Wednesday also hope Urby Emanuelson and Marco Matias will return to full training next week after lengthy lay-offs, but midfielder Almen Abdi is still out injured.

Carvalhal said: "David Jones is back in training. He had a little problem after Middlesbrough.

"Gary Hooper played with the Under-23s but he felt a little pain in a different leg. We think he will train 100 per cent tomorrow. He trained with a few limitations yet. Let's see if he will be back tomorrow.

"Marco and Urby are back on the pitch and we believe they will start full training at the beginning of next week.”

The Owls hope to complete the signing of Barnsley striker Sam Winnall on Friday.
