Sheffield Wednesday boss Carvalhal insists lessons will be learned from team selection

Carlos Carvalhal admits that he will learn lessons from his decision to name an unchanged Sheffield Wednesday side in Tuesday night's difficult encounter with Brentford.

Wednesday prevailed thanks to a determined showing in a 2-1 triumph, but it was a far from straightforward evening, with the Bees dominating the first half and spurning several opportunities to add to their early lead on a night when they could have been out of sight before Gary Hooper's leveller in the first-half of stoppage-time.

Owls head coach Carvalhal hinted that, on another night, his decision not to freshen up his side and name the same starting line-up from the weekend could have easily been exposed and he is likely to be more pragmatic with his selection policy in the future.

He said: "We won on Saturday. Even though we had one or two players with problems, we wanted to keep the momentum.

"It was my option to pick the same team. We had one or two who had not totally recovered, but we took the decision to play the same team because we played well and tried to keep the momentum.

"But after you have the reverse of the coin. We had some players who had problems in the second half.

"I must do the substitutions very late because we don't know what can happen with Ross Wallace, Jack Hunt, Barry Bannan or Kieran Lee. We knew we had to take Steven Fletcher off in the game. It made things very, very difficult to us.

"It is a lesson to the future. Next time, I will decide between keeping the momentum or eventually or putting some fresh legs in - physical and mental - to give some energy to the team.

"People talk about momentum and they should pay attention to this game, because in future I will remember this game as it will help my decisions."
