The Terriers’ record-signing has been one of the key figures in Huddersfield’s unexpected promotion push.

His assured displays at the back have, a slight wobble in October and November apart, helped plug what last season was one of the leakiest defences in the second tier. The upshot has been Huddersfield spending just one week outside the top six this term and seven weeks at the summit. Even that, though, can not tempt Schindler to take a peek.

“You spend a lot of energy looking at the table a lot,” said the defender, who joined for £1.8m from TSV 1860 Munich last summer. “I know this from my last club – and you must save energy.

“No-one expected us to do this. It means we look forward to the next challenge without the pressure of being at the bottom. We have pressure now, of course, but we look forward to games.”

Today’s derby is one such game to whet the appetite, as by full-time Town could be seven points clear of Wednesday or within a point. It is also a chance for Huddersfield to exact revenge on the Owls for their 1-0 triumph at the John Smith’s Stadium in October.

“Forestieri is a really strong player,” said Schindler when asked about Wednesday’s match-winner and outstanding performer that day. “One of the strongest I have played against in England.

“He is different to most, not like the really powerful players. He is fast and really skilful. We have to try and win the battles against him – and not give him too much space.

“We have a lot of derby games in this area and that makes it really exciting. The season will not be finished after this game but it is important and we want to win.”
