Callum Paterson on playing with a 'smile on my face again' at Sheffield Wednesday

NEW SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY signing Callum Paterson has revealed that he is looking forward to playing football with a 'smile on my face again' - after joining the Owls from Cardiff City - in a deal worth around £500,000.

The Scottish international, 25, who joined the Bluebirds initially as a right-back before being switched further forward, has struggled for opportunities in South Wales under Neil Harris after previously being a regular following his move to the club from Heart of Midlothian in 2017.

The arrival of Kieffer Moore in the close season further pushed Paterson down the pecking order.

Paterson scored ten goals in his maiden season at the club in 2017-18 during their promotion campaign to the top-flight under Neil Warnock - scoring ten times.

He weighed in with four goals in the Premier League in 2018-19 and found the net on seven occasions last term.

London-born Paterson - who qualifies for Scotland through his father - had not featured for Cardiff this season with his sole appearance coming for Scotland in their Nations League game with the Czech Republic.

On joining Wednesday, the player, posting on his Instagram site, said: "Absolutely buzzing to be here! Can't wait to get started with this massive club and to show everyone what I can do.

"So grateful for the opportunity here and hopefully I can repay everyone with some goals and help get the club moving in the right direction. Looking forward to playing with a smile on my face again!"

Paterson is the club's fifth major capture this window following on from the signings of Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Chey Dunkley, Elias Kachunga and Josh Windass.
