The former Cardiff City player, 25, who joined the Bluebirds initially as a right-back before being switched further forward, has confirmed that manager Garry Monk has signed him to play as a striker.

On his role, Paterson, eyeing a debut at home to QPR on Saturday, said: “He (Monk) wants me up top.

“I have played in a lot of positions so I am quite comfortable playing up top. I love being up there and love being amongst the goals.

“So I am happy to be there and do the best I can. I think I will offer a bit of physicality. Some hustle and bustle.

“I run the channels and get in people’s faces and rough up the game. Hopefully, I can do my job and get the boys firing.”

The Scottish international, who has joined the Owls in a deal worth around £500,000, admits he is looking forward to playing football ‘with a smile again’ after struggling for opportunities in South Wales under Neil Harris after previously being a regular following his move to the club from Hearts in 2017.

Paterson scored 10 goals in his maiden season at the club in 2017-18 during Cardiff’s promotion campaign to the top-flight under Neil Warnock.

He weighed in with four goals in the Premier League in 2018-19 and found the net on seven occasions last term.

Paterson had not featured for Cardiff this season with his sole appearance coming for Scotland in their Nations League game with the Czech Republic.

Posting on his Instagram site following his move, he said: “Absolutely buzzing to be here! Can’t wait to get started with this massive club and to show everyone what I can do.

“So grateful for the opportunity here and hopefully I can repay everyone with some goals and help get the club moving in the right direction. Looking forward to playing with a smile on my face again!”

Paterson is the club’s fifth major capture this window following on from the earlier signings of Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Chey Dunkley, Elias Kachunga and Josh Windass.
