Coventry City v Sheffield Wednesday - Why Sam Hutchinson swappwed Cyprus for a Hillsborough return

The combative midfielder was released in the summer – after six years at Hillsborough – and ended up playing in Cyprus.

On Monday the 31-year-old former Chelsea player rejoined the Owls – signing a short-term deal – in the battle to secure their Championship status, and hopes to be involved for tonight’s trip to Coventry City.

It would cap a whirlwind 72 hours for a player who was frozen out by former Owls boss Garry Monk. His last appearance in a Wednesday shirt came 12 months ago, in an FA Cup tie at QPR on January 24 2020.

“I’m hoping to get into the action straight away but that’s not up to me so we will see,” said Hutchinson.

That decision will rest with caretaker manager Neil Thompson – in charge since Monk’s exit last month – but the addition of Hutchinson brings much-needed defensive cover to central midfield and allows playmaker Barry Bannan to push forward.

“I think it will be emotional when I do pull on the shirt again if I’m being honest. I am invested in Sheffield Wednesday. I am so happy right now. There’s been a smile on my face since I signed, my wife says I look happy and that’s exactly the way I feel.”

After leaving Cypriot club Pafos, Hutchinson revealed he rejected several other clubs to return to Hillsborough.

“It was always about Sheffield Wednesday,” he said. “I had options elsewhere and to be fair it’s my agent’s job to see what’s out there and there were offers but this is not about money or anything, it’s about me being back at Sheffield Wednesday.

“I have always had a good relationship with the players, the staff, everyone really. They have been brilliant with me since I came back, it’s the perfect fit.

“The only thing that matters is that Sheffield Wednesday wanted me and I want Sheffield Wednesday. These fans have been amazing with me and I really feel for them at the moment missing out on their football. I’m from down south, I’m a real southern boy at heart but here in Sheffield, it just feels like home. My kids love it here, they love Sheffield Wednesday and the kit order is in already!”
