Losing a derby by the odd goal when you hit the woodwork in the second half is hard to take but it was not the worst news Sheffield Wednesday had on Saturday.

During the 2-1 defeat to Barnsley defender Dominic Iorfa ruptured his Achilles, and he is not expected to play again this season.

Manager Tony Pulis described the news as “a massive blow.

"Dominic has been such a great lad since I’ve come into the football club, he’s been really desperate to play,” he said. “I thought today at times he was very, very good, so to lose him now is a massive blow for us. I think he’ll be having the operation on Monday or Tuesday - as soon as they can do it.

“In training he’s looked like a Rolls Royce for us, he’s been that good.”

The Owls took the lead through Josh Windass but Barnsley responded with first-half goals from Cauley Woodrow and Dominik Frieser.

Second-half substitute Joey Pelupessy had a shot which hit the crossbar, bounced off goalkeeper Jack Walton onto the post, and out to safety.

“It was a good start, Barnsley were a little bit old-fashioned in their style with the way they get the ball up to Woodrow and get around him,” said Pulis.

“Nothing is quite going for us.

“I thought we were the better team second half. These are all big games coming up, we need to look at where we need to strengthen and get better. We need to bring players in with more quality and that bit more know-how.

“I'm disappointed for them today because they worked hard second half.”

Valerien Ismael says his team will take belief from their seventh victory of the season.

“It was a big win tonight and it will give us good confidence,” he said..

“We spoke after the Bournemouth game and we said we would make mistakes, we had to learn from them.

“To come back in a game is important. We did it against Birmingham so we knew we could. It's a good feeling and a good thing for us for the future.”

As he did after Tuesday's 2-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers, he praised his side's defensive performance.

“We were very good defensively in the second half, well organised, but I was not completely happy because we were too deep and we put more pressure on ourselves, we gave them more chance to get the second goal so I tried to push the line higher,” he said/

“But the guys gave everything they had to win the game and structure and organisation was good, it helped us to win the game.”
