Garry Monk hails Sheffield Wednesday's 'complete performance' as they prove a point whilst earning three

Garry Monk praised his Sheffield Wednesday side for a “complete performance” as well as a much-needed win over previously-unbeaten Bournemouth.

After four straight defeats, the last three without scoring, the Owls just needed a win of any description.

Winning 1-0 through a Barry Bannan penalty might have looked like the minimum requirement but in fact they were well worthy of a first home win in 12 matches.

“We had everything. It was a complete performance,” said a delighted Monk at full-time.

“We were doing that well enough up to Birmingham (their previous win) then we had a terrible week We fought back really hard and it was important to show we do have that in us. I've said all along it was there but we need to prove it on the football pitch.

“We knew how important it was regardless of the performance to get the points and the pleasing bit is we did it with the performance as well against such a good side.

“It was a good marker, a good answer and a good fightback from what was a terrible three games.”

Wednesday had not won at Hillsborough since February. They are back there on Saturday, to face Millwall.

“I'd not even thought about that,” admitted Monk when he was asked about lifting the hoodoo.

“I just don't think like that. I get it and I know it and I take responsibility for it but if you carry that with you in your daily work with players and staff it's not going to get you anywhere.

“I think that sends a message – definitely within and hopefully without. It's just about being consistent now.

“It just shows you how mad football can be.”

Victory moves Wednesday up to minus one point after 12 were docked for financial breaches in the summer, and the manager insists they remain on course to meet the target he set at the start of the campaign.

“The target for us at the start of the season was to make sure that by the start of the international break coming we were out of the 12-point deficit,” he claimed.”Then we had the feeling after Birmingham that we were going to get there much sooner and to have the week we had – I just can't put that into words.”
