Garry Monk has high praise for Sheffield Wednesday duo

The former is currently in possession of the first-team gloves, with Monk taking the chance to hand him a run of games before the end of the season, having previously had an extended look at Dawson, who has had to settle for bench duties during football's resumption.

It remains to be seen who is given the nod next season, but Monk believes that the professional rivalry between both Sheffield-born custodians - in their mid-twenties and with similar amounts of first-team experience and career curves - is good news for the club.

Monk said: "I have said with Cam and Joey that I am excited to be working with those two. Both are young and fit the profile of being hungry and they have both got a bit of experience.

"They are not young, inexperienced goalkeepers, they have got some experience behind them.

"There is definitely improvement in them both. But they are at the same sort of level.

"Cam first came in during difficult circumstances and did well and of course, there was part of that period where we did not do well.

"The key is to see what they both can do. I know what Cam can do. I rate them both very highly, but needed to see what Joey can do. He played against Manchester City, but up until that point, he hadn't played.

"So I wanted to use this period to see what Joe could do as well and he's done fantastic. The best thing about the two of them is that there is going to be a really healthy competition going forward and that is something that the club needs - not just in the goal, but everywhere.

"That is a position I am very happy with and I am looking forward to working with those two moving forward.

“They have all worked yesterday so hopefully there’s no reaction today, we’ll see this morning how they come in and how they are feeling.

Meanwhile, Monk has confirmed that the season is over for young defender Osaze Urhoghide due to a knee problem.

The 20-year-old has made four appearances this season but has not featured since football’s return this summer.

"I do not think he is going to make this season. He has got a slight knee injury and he’s only young, so we have got to make sure he is right," Monk added

"It is going to be too soon for this season, but we are hopeful he will be back for the start of pre-season whenever that is next season.

Monk will assess Connor Wickham, Kieran Lee and Liam Palmer ahead of Saturday's trip to Fulham.

Wednesday finish their season at home to Middlesbrough next Wednesday.
