The 22-year-old, who became a free agent in the summer after leaving Villa Park, was a highly-regarded prospect coming through the ranks at the Midlands giants - and made his Premier League debut at the age of 17 during the 2015-16 campaign.

Green, who spent loan spells at Charlton and Preston last term, is now seeking to reignite his career at Hillsborough.

Several clubs including Luton Town, Brentford and Barnsley had been linked with the Solihull-born player - although Reds head coach Valerien Ismael coolled any talk of a potential move last week.

On his move, he said: “I have been out of football for around six months but I have been waiting for the right opportunity and it had to be the right opportunity with the right club. Sheffield Wednesday feels perfect for me.

“I’m so looking forward to getting started with Wednesday. It’s been a difficult time being out of the game and we’ve all had the lockdown as well. But I have used that to my advantage, to try and be positive because that’s my nature. I know the pressures awaiting me playing for this football club but I am ready and equipped.

“Everything that has happened has made me even hungrier to succeed. I was hungry anyway but what has been happening has just given me even more focus and even more desire. So I look at that period as a blessing in disguise.

“This is the perfect place for me to settle into and make a name for myself. I am at the right age to do something special. I have my targets and I want to accomplish them with Wednesday. This is the new start I wanted at the perfect club, it means the world to me to say to my family ‘here it is, this is it, Wednesday is my new home’. That is what this move means to me.”

Green made 48 first-team appearances for Villa under four different managers.

The winger was part of Dean Smith's promotion campaign after he was recalled from his loan stint at Portsmouth in January, 2019 and helped Villa to play-off final success, featuring in both semi-final legs against West Bromwich Albion and the Wembley showdown with Derby County in May, 2019.

Green's last Villa goal came in February, 2019 in the dramatic 3-3 draw with Sheffield United.
