Bolton Wanderers 1 Sheffield Wednesday 1: Owls hopeful red card will be rescinded after Semedo exits in tears

On a day of controversial decisions, Semedo was dismissed for a tackle on Jay Spearing, an outcome which Owls manager Dave Jones felt was harsh.

That followed the ruling out of Jermaine Johnson’s headed ‘goal’ as Reda Johnson was judged offside.

Semedo was in tears as he walked off the pitch and Jones believes the former Charlton midfielder’s reaction was an indicator that referee Chris Foy got it wrong.

He said: “You can tell by the reaction of the players and Jose is distraught because there is nothing wrong with the tackle.

“We know his game inside out and it is not his nature to go out and hurt someone. He has one foot on the floor and we will appeal the decision.

“Hopefully, the referee will look at it again and reverse the decision.”

The Owls had fallen behind against the run of play when former Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford slotted home a well-worked goal.

Matty Fryatt was then denied in a one-on-one with Wanderers goalkeeper Adam Bogdan.

But the Owls got their reward when Alex Baptiste scored an own goal, diverting in Jeremy Helan’s wicked cross.

Impressive midfielder Giles Coke fired wide when picked out by Michail Antonio before Jones was left fuming when assistant referee Sian Massey flagged to rule out Jermaine Johnson’s effort.

“There is nothing wrong with it from what we saw at the time and from what we have seen on the video,” said Jones.

“Jermaine heads it in but the assistant’s flag is up and there’s nothing we can do about it. We can’t get the goal back but we can get the sending-off rescinded on appeal if the referee changes his mind after seeing it again.

“I am proud of them all. We were magnificent, we completely dominated the game and had chances to win it. Then when we do get what we feel is a perfectly good goal, we have it disallowed.

“I feel for the players and I feel for the fans, who were superb once again. They have seen us put on a performance and these fans know when they see a performance. Everybody gave absolutely everything and we haven’t got what we deserved.”

Owls goalkeeper Chris Kirkland produced two late saves to keep out headers from Tim Ream and Baptiste, but believes Wednesday will soon capture their first win of the season.

He said: “We were obviously disappointed with just a point. I thought we controlled the majority of the game.

“We’ve all just got to keep going, get on with it and give more performances like we did on Saturday.”
