Cardiff City v Sheffield Wednesday: Palmer determined to draw line under mauling

The Owls make the long trip to south Wales to take on Cardiff City hoping to banish memories of Wednesday’s 7-0 hammering by holders Manchester City in the Capital One Cup.

Stuart Gray’s men actually matched their illustrious hosts in the first half but were then swept away by the Premier League champions after the break at the Etihad Stadium.

Palmer said: “We have to take a bit of pleasure in our performance. We conceded a lot of goals in the Cup but before that we hadn’t conceded many at all. We have to draw on that and pick ourselves up quickly.

“All of us knew the Manchester City game was a bonus, a one-off. We take the experience from it and learn from it to go again at Cardiff.

“We have another tough game coming up in the Championship. But we have had some good results away from home this season and will travel full of confidence.

“Away from home, we have done well this season. That is because we have put into action what the manager tells us. He goes in depth into what he wants us to do. We trust in his ways and it has been working for us.”

Kamil Zayatte is suspended today after being red-carded at the Etihad as Stuart Gray reverts to his first-choice XI after making four changes in the Cup.

Wednesday may have been on the end of a huge beating come the final whistle but Palmer believes the experience of taking on such a top quality side will be a big benefit.

Palmer said: “You have to admire the players at the top level. It showed (on Wednesday) what it takes to play at that top level. How they manage the game and things like that.

“What was great about the Cup game was our fans. They never stopped signing, even when the fifth, sixth and seventh goals went in.

“One other plus was we did hold our own in the first half. At 0-0, it gave us a chance but then they really stepped it up.”
