Carlisle United 0 Sheffield Wednesday 1: Miller gives Megson lift-off as Owls finally beat travel sickness

Sheffield Wednesday ended their dismal run of 10 games without a win thanks to Tommy Miller’s 20th-minute strike which gave Gary Megson his first victory in charge.

“It’s a big plus for us to have kept two consecutive clean sheets. I’m delighted with the players’ honesty because they looked a bit jaded. We’ll have a couple of days off now. After five games away on the trot, everyone is sick of being on the bus. It takes it out of you,” said Megson.

“Carlisle played some decent stuff but most of it was in front of us. They had huge pressure and put a lot of balls in. I thought our backs were excellent,” he added.

Wednesday striker Gary Madine only got the all-clear to play just before the game and the former Carlisle favourite received warm applause from the Cumbrian faithful when he made way for Clinton Morrison late on.

By then he had played a part in setting up the winner. Man of the match Isaiah Osbourne forced a corner off Matty Robson and though the makeshift full-back cleared Madine’s flicked header off the line at the far post, Miller was on hand to hammer the ball past Adam Collin.

Chances also fell for Liam Palmer, Gary Teale and Darren Potter and at the other end, Nicky Weaver saved from Ben Marshall and denied Peter Murphy what would have been a late equaliser.

Carlisle chief Greg Abbott said: “Wednesday came here and set their stall out. They are not a bad team and they came here to stop us playing.

“They got 10 men behind the ball and we didn’t have the type of player to break them down. We needed a player on £10,000 a week to give us the sort of quality we needed. We haven’t got anyone here on £2,000!”
