Charlton v Sheffield Wednesday: Winter campaign can spark an Owls revival

The Owls head south to Charlton today, without a win in their past six Championship games, four of which have been draws, with head coach Gray’s side lacking the potency to turn any of those into craved-for wins.

Gray, in the market for striking reinforcements, believes luck has not favoured the Owls on occasions, but, equally, he feels it is about making your own fortune.

On the deficient scoring statistic, Gray said: “It is a concern, do not get me wrong.

“But Glenn Loovens hit the post with a header against Watford and Stevie May hit the post at Brentford and Kieran Lee has, too. So we are not far away and it is thin dividing lines.

“We have got to be in those areas and keep shooting and taking things on.

“But, at the end of the day, it is the scoreline at the end of the game that counts.

“With back-to-back wins, we are probably better off winning two and losing two.

“But I cannot fault the effort and commitment the boys are putting in to try to win games of football.”

Despite the Owls’ recent run, Gray is more than confident they can get back on track again and is entitled to be assuaged by memories of the club’s fine season-turning winter form of the past two campaigns, which will provide Wednesdayites with a fair degree of warmth for the dark nights ahead.

He added: “Last season, after 17 games, we put a run together and I have every confidence we can do that again.

“If I can get the couple of players I want to bring in, that will improve us as we will cause teams problems.”
