Clarke heads for Chsterfield after Di Canio row

FORMER Sheffield Wednesday striker Leon Clarke is set to join Chesterfield on loan after a bust-up with Swindon Town manager Paolo Di Canio.

Clarke is only three weeks into a two-year deal at Swindon but has been told he will never play for the club again by Di Canio.

The pair clashed following a Carling Cup defeat by Southampton last week with Clarke reacting angrily to Di Canio both at pitchside and in the players’ tunnel.

Chesterfield manager John Sheridan has been looking for a new striker since losing Craig Davies to Barnsley this summer. His side have scored only four goals in six games and sit next-to-bottom of the League One table.

The Owls, meanwhile, are set to discover the extent of injuries to goalkeeper Nicky Weaver and striker Ryan Lowe today.

Weaver missed Monday night’s game at Charlton Athletic with a knee injury and manager Gary Megson has expressed fears that he will be out for a ‘long time.’

Lowe limped off with an ankle injury at Charlton – just days after joining the club for around £100,000 from Bury. Defender Julian Bennett and winger Jermaine Johnson could return from injury in time for Saturday’s home game with Milton Keynes Dons.

The Football League have ordered Doncaster Rovers to pay up to £180,000 for midfielder Kyle Bennett and Huddersfield Town to pay up to £445,000 for midfielder Oscar Gobern.

Both sums were set by the Professional Football Compensations Committee which rules on domestic deals involving players under the age of 24.

Rovers will initially pay £40,000 for Bennett, who moved from Bury this summer, a further £40,000 in the New Year, and further payments of £25,000 after 15, 30, 45, and 60 appearances. They will also give Bury 20 per cent of the profit from any future sell on fee.

Town will pay an initial fee of £275,000 for Gobern, who moved from Southampton, and further payments of £30,000 after 15, 30, 45, and 60 appearances. They will pay an additional £50,000 if they win promotion this season or next and also give Southampton 20 per cent of any future profit from his transfer fee.

Hull City have appointed Seamus ‘Jim’ McDonagh as goalkeeping coach following the departure of Joe Corrigan.

McDonagh, 58, has worked in similar roles at clubs including Plymouth Argyle, Aston Villa, and Coventry City. He started his playing career at hometown club Rotherham United in the early 1970s.

The Tigers, meanwhile, say Corrigan left the club after expressing a need to be closer to his family.
