Yorkshireman Cooper, whose deal at Swindon Town is due to expire next summer, has been sounded out by the Owls over the head coaching role, with resolving the compensation fee wanted by the Robins being the chief barrier still to overcome.

Swindon are said to be seeking compensation of around £75,000 for Cooper, ho has not been offered fresh terms at the County Ground.

Reports suggest that a deal could still be finalised this week, with Wednesday waiting to formally announce Carvalhal’s arrival until they have appointed a head coach.

Despite the protracted nature of Cooper’s possible move to S6, the Owls remain relaxed over the time-scale, with their only concern being a successful resolution to the talks.

Representatives of Cooper were initially spoken to by Wednesday officials about the prospect of him coming to Hillsborough as assistant to Carvalhal last week.

But Cooper, who took Swindon to the League One play-off final in May, despite having a comparatively low budget, said that he was only interested in the head coaching role, and not coming in as a number two.
