FT: Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 Oldham Athletic

SheffIeld Wednesday climbed back above city rivals Sheffield United into the second automatic promotion spot in League One with a comfortable lunchtime victory.

Wednesday have 83 points to united’s 82, but the Blades have a game in hand against Rochdale tomorrow night.

But it was mid-table Oldham who made the early running, forcing a number of corners as they took the game to the Owls.

Wednesday, however, should have taken the lead on 23 minutes when Michail Antonio raced clear and saw his shot saved.

Oldham continued to press with Robbie Simpson going close before Gary Madine scored three minutes before the interval, darting in front of his defender to glance home a superb cross from Miguel Llera who had burst forward down the left flank from inside his own half.

Then midway through the second half Llera got himself on the scoresheet when he burst to the front post to meet Keith Treacy’s free-kick and head in from close range.

And the Owls then caught Oldham on the berak as substitute Ryan Lowe headed the third in the 80th minute.

Manager Dave Jones said: “Well done to the players and to the staff. Playing two games quickly is very hard to do.

“The lads had to dig deep. That’s what they’ve done. They grafted hard and got the result.”
