Huddersfield 0 Sheffield Wednesday 0: Yorkshire stalemate for Terriers and Owls

The result left visitors Wednesday without a win in 11 games but still a point clear of their hosts.

Scotland striker Stevie May went the closest to breaking the deadlock with a shot which struck the bar and then the far post but Huddersfield will point to two opportunities for substitute striker Nahki Wells, who was denied by Owls goalkeeper Keiren Westwood before opposite number Joe Murphy pulled off a flying save to deny Royston Drenthe in stoppage time.

Both sides gave debuts to loan signings. Diego Poyett, from West Ham, replaced Jon Hogg in front of the Town defence and Lewis McGugan took his place in central midfield for the Owls after joining from Watford.

A back spasm ruled out Town goalkeeper Alex Smithies and he was replaced by Joe Murphy, while Wednesday also made one other change with Royston Drenthe coming in on the right flank. Giles Coke and Chris Maguire were the players to miss out.

Opportunities were rare in the goalless first half but Wednesday were indebted to a sliding challenge from Tom Lees to prevent Sean Scannell tapping home from a squared pass from Tommy Smith after Jacob Butterfield had split the defence in the 30th minute.

The game opened up after the break with Town making adouble substitution in the 67th minute before the Owls followed suit 10 minutes later.

Wells immediately tested Westwood after coming on and the keeper also blocked the ball as the striker attempted to smash it past him.

May’s quick turn and shot saw the ball rattle the bar and post and there were several scrambles in the Town area from corners before Murphy dived full length to his right to keep out a curling attempt from Drenthe at the death.
