McGugan, renowned as a set-piece exponent, left his hometown club to join Watford in the summer of 2013, rebuffing offers from the Premier League to join up with then Watford manager Gianfranco Zola.

After slipping down the pecking order at Vicarage Road of late, McGugan is now eyeing a regular run for the Owls, starting with Saturday’s derby at Huddersfield Town.

On his move to Hillsborough, McGugan said: “I am pleased to sign. This is a great club and a great chance for me to play games and help the team move forward.

“I have not played as many games as I want this season. so I need to get back out there and perform.

“The main thing is the team and helping them progress. If I can score some goals and help add points to the board, then great.

“I see myself very much as an attacking midfield player and goals have been a massive part of my career. I want to bring that to Sheffield Wednesday. I am ready and raring to go, whether that is from the start or the bench, and I will give it everything.”

The Owls have scored just 12 goals in 17 Championship games.
