Megson keen on Wood to bolster Owls attack

SHEFFIELD Wednesday manager Gary Megson is targeting West Bromwich Albion striker Chris Wood after signing defender Danny Batth on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Wood is still regarded as a player for the future by Albion manager Roy Hodgson but impressed at League One level last season when on loan at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Although still only 19, he has played in the World Cup finals for New Zealand and made his Premier League debut last season against Liverpool.

He also spent a brief period on loan at Barnsley.

The Owls have been chasing Preston North End striker Neil Mellor this summer and failed with a £200,000 bid for Rochdale’s Chris O’Grady.

Irish striker Padraig Amond has been on trial but will not be offered a permanent deal.

Batth, meanwhile, is back at Hillsborough after impressing on loan towards the end of last season.

The 20-year-old centre-back says it was an ‘easy decision’ to re-join the Owls after being allowed out on loan again by Wolves manager Mick McCarthy.

“It’s good to be back,” he said. “I got on really well with the lads last time and hopefully I can pick up where I left off.”
