Miller and Hinds shown exit door at Wednesday

SHEFFIELD Wednesday manager Gary Megson has offered new deals to three out-of-contract players – winger Jermaine Johnson, midfielder James O’Connor and defender Lewis Buxton.

Midfielder Tommy Miller and defender Richard Hinds, however, have been shown the exit door. The news was announced last night as Megson started a summer shake-up at Hillsborough.

The Owls are targeting six new signings over the next few months including Preston North End striker Neil Mellor and Scunthorpe United defender Rob Jones, who were on loan at the club this season. Megson will also be speaking to Wolves about the possibility of bringing loan defender Danny Batth back to the club.

Former Ipswich Town midfielder Miller, 32, has waved farewell after two seasons at the club. Doubts were cast over his future last month when it emerged that he would not be allowed to start 30 games as that triggered a clause in his contract guaranteeing a new deal.

Defender Hinds, meanwhile, started only five games this season. Megson said: “These are always difficult decisions to make but any help I can give Tommy or Richard I will be happy to do so.”

After a season disrupted by injury, former Bradford winger Johnson put together a string of impressive performances in the last few weeks to convince Megson he had a future.

Midfielder O’Connor, 31, played previously under Megson at West Bromwich Albion and, despite being in and out of the side at times, his commitment to the Owls has never been in question. Buxton, 27, joined the Owls three years ago from Stoke and has clearly impressed Megson.

Midfielder Joey O’Brien, meanwhile, is back at Bolton following his loan spell.
