Sheffield Wednesday 3 Exeter City 0: Best display this season, says Megson

Sheffield Wednesday maintained their 100 per cent home record at Hillsborough with a comfortable win over Exeter City in League One.

Strikers Chris O’Grady and Ryan Lowe were back from injury for the Owls but had to settle for places on the bench as manager Gary Megson kept faith with Gary Madine and David McGoldrick.

Midfielder David Prutton was ruled out after suffering a thigh injury - James O’Connor starting - and new signing Stephen Bywater made his debut in goal.

Reda Johnson came in for right-back Julian Bennett, who dropped to the bench.

Owls striker Clinton Morrison has joined MK Dons on a month’s loan.

The first half hour was scrappy as the visitors broke up the game’s tempo.

But Wednesday took the lead five minutes before half-time when O’Connor pounced to force the ball home from close range.

Three minutes later it was 2-0 as Madine headed home after a terrible blunder from goalkeeper Artur Krysiak.

Madine added a second-half penalty as Wednesday cruised to an easy three points.

Owls manager Gary Megson said: “Teams pay us a big compliment when they set up like that at Hillsborough and it’s up to us to break them down.

“We can go over them, round them or through them and I thought we did all three at various points today.

“So I would say that was our best home performance of the season so far.”
